Itinerary

Andalucia Cycle Tour Route & Itinerary

Arrival Day (no cycling)

Meet in our hotel just south of Seville for briefing and bike fitting / prep. We provide transfers from Seville Airport.
On arrival in Seville we will transport you and your bike to our hotel in Dos Hermanas to prepare for departure the following day. You may choose to arrive in Seville a day earlier if you wish to enjoy the sights of this beautiful city. We tried a route from the centre of Seville but decided our clients would much prefer to avoid 20 kilometres of city riding. We prepare bikes and gear a little further south in Dos Hermanas. If you have a bike box, it will be taken away and stored until the end of the tour. At the end of the tour, we will drop you off at Valencia Airport.

Cycling Day 1 - Dos Hermanas to Ronda - 127 km 1,910 m

From our hotel we cycle through the beautiful Algondales towards Ronda. After a gentle start for 100k you then wind your way uphill to the hilltop settlement of Ronda in the Spanish province of Malaga. Capture the magic of the quaint Pueblos Blancos en route; the white towns of Andalucia in the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. The views of the canyon from the town bridges are among the top tourist attractions in the town.

Cycling Day 2  - Ronda to Antequera - 90 km 1,770 m

This day starts with a climb out of Ronda to the Parc of Sierra de las Nieves where you’ll be rewarded with a lovely ‘col’ sign ‘puerto del Viento’ at 1190 metres: Rest your bike against it for the compulsory photo shoot. Then from here to lunch you can freewheel much and enjoy the view. The highlight of the day is undoubtedly freewheeling down El Chorro Gorge with it’s cool breeze. Finish with a gentle climb into the delightful town of Antequera.

Cycling Day 3 - Antequera to Granada (Zaidin) - 126 km 1,990 m

As we head towards Granada and the well-known mountain range of the Sierra Nevada don’t start to take this remarkable landscape for granted. The freewheel to Lunch in Alhama de Granada will put a smile back on your face after a tough morning. The sight-seeing continues and the smooth tarmac allows you enough wiggle room to move eyes right and left to fully appreciate the sun glistening off of the many embalses (reservoirs) you pass on the way. Camera at the ready today.

Cycling Day 4 - Granada (Zaidin) to Baza - 130 km 1,890 m

Today is our biggest climbing day and from the foothills of the ski zone we follow a path between the Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Huetor out into the olive tree plains. We have two main climbs today and at the first we reach the highest point on our tour at 1301 metres (my wahoo said so) where you’ll find a squashed ‘col’ sign (probably dented by the bottoms of many a celebrating cyclist) unless the local council have finally decided to replace it … today we have a short (9k) transfer to avoid a motorway section.

Cycling Day 5 - Baza to Lorca - 138 km 1,400 m

We continue to head east and Day 5 again produces some stunning cycling landscapes. Look out for the interesting little houses carved into the rock at the 24k mark before you head left and north at Cullar. Little Orce makes a lovely coffee stop and resist singing ‘How do you solve a problem like …’ as you climb the last hill of the day into ‘Maria’ for lunch. The last 50k today is a lovely descent into Lorca where you are welcomed by the sight of its medieval castle as you approach the town.

Cycling Day 6 - Lorca to Murcia - 100 km 1,436 m

From Lorca we head north into the Parc Regionale Sierra D’espuna; training ground of many cycling greats! Today is one big climb and one even bigger descent. You are in for some switchback fun! Plenty of energy left for the one mile stroll into town to see Murcia’s famous Cathedral and the Segura River and partake of the local nightlife and cuisine.

Cycling Day 7 - Murcia to Alcoi - 142 km 2,200 m

Day 7 takes us north up through the fertile plains to the hills of El Maigmo. The sheer variety of crops as you travel the whole of our route is a joy to see and this section is particularly abundant with rows of fruit trees and a variety of produce. On recce rides I must admit to hopping off the bike on occasion to sit on the verge re-fuelling with the odd pomegranate.

Cycling Day 8 - Alcoi to Valencia - 132 km 1,250 m

Leaving Alcoi we embark on our last day of cycling to the busy mediterranean port of Valencia. This gorgeous city is home to some of the most acclaimed historical architecture and Turi Gardens is one of the largest urban parks in Spain. It runs through the city on the site of the old river boasting footpaths, leisure and sports areas galore. Runners can clock up kilometres with measured markers and as you cycle in along the coast you’ll appreciate the cycle-friendly paths leading you to the heart of the city.
Finish meal and drinks at our hotel to celebrate!

Departure Day (no cycling)

We will arrange convenient transfer from our hotel to Valencia Airport for your return flight. Paul and I wish you a safe journey home. Hurry back! We’re continually having fun out exploring and adding new routes to our growing portfolio of exceptional cycle tours.

Total over eight days: 1,000 km 13,600 m
